Everyone knows The Big E has it all, especially whimsically fantastic alcoholic drinks. From caramel-rimmed hard ciders and pickle juice-infused ales to frozen Twisted Teas and color-changing vodka, it’s hard to not want a taste of everything. blooming cotton candy

But any seasoned ticket holder also knows three fairground cocktails could put you over your limit, be it financial or alcoholic.

May we introduce the fair’s latest triumph: the Cotton Candy Cocktail Flight.

At the agreeable price of $22.68 at the Cantina bar, tucked in the corner of the Better Living Center, you’ll get a flight of four multicolored cocktails.

Served in smaller cups over ice, the black wire tray stacks a rum punch, a blue Hawaiian, a red sangria and a mai tai. Best of all, large tufts of pink and blue cotton candy poked through the straws float over the drinks.

The candy can be eaten separate, but watching the soft sugar melt in over the ice cubes is half the fun — and where the creation’s true adventure in how it all might taste lies.

Cantina uses several alcohols to make the drinks, including Bacardi rum, Stoli vodka and Chambord liqueur.

We started our flight into cotton candy land with the mai tai. A bit of the blue cotton candy made for a light greenish-blue coloring on top of the ice.

Alone, the mai tai was good ... with cotton candy, it was great.

The orange and lime flavors of the drink — which had some additional punching notes of coconut — mixed well with the blue raspberry to bring out its tropical taste.

This was the drink we were most intrigued to mix with candy, as no two red sangrias are ever alike when it comes to tartness. It was going to be either a hit or a miss. Attempting to be mindful of what fruits we were dealing with here, we chose to pair it with our pink strawberry cotton candy.

Surprisingly, wine and cotton candy go together like peanut butter and fluff — not something you want all the time, but a sweet little treat. The cotton candy balanced out any tartness in the red sangria to make it a lighter drink.

It seems like a no-brainer for something as sweet as a blue Hawaiian to be paired with cotton candy. Though Cantina’s blue Hawaiian was more green in appearance, we felt it was only natural to pair it with the blue cotton candy.

The taste was just as sweet as you’d imagine. It felt like the blue raspberry cotton candy belonged there, again mixing well with the citrusy orange and weaving through the piña colada. As the highest-rated drink on this list, we’d recommend asking the bartender for this one in full size.

Finally, we circled back around to another tropical rum drink on the flight. Since it was our final drink, we decided to go a little wild and add both strawberry and blue raspberry cotton candy.

It all made for a sweetly refreshing, spectacular combination. The drink itself was extremely similar to the mai tai, with the same rummy coconut notes mixed into an orange and lime tropical flavor profile. Adding in the cotton candies gave it a definite boost.

If you’re looking for something that screams, “I’m at The Big E,” in the most polite way, this Cotton Candy Cocktail Flight is for you. You get lots of options to make the flight your own, and it all feeds perfectly into the fair’s reputation of providing never-before-seen foodie creations. We had an average rating of 8.5/10 across the drinks.
