DUBOIS — The DuBois junior high football team shook off a slow start Thursday afternoon to beat Brookville, 27-6, in its home opener at Mansell Stadium to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Both offenses struggled to find a rhythm, particularly in the first quarter where the Beavers collected the only two first downs for either side. DuBois eventually found the end zone twice to lead 14-0 at the half, before pushing that lead to 21-0 in the third quarter.
DuBois starting subbing at that point, with both teams finding the end zone in the fourth to set the final score.
The Beavers appeared to have a promising drive going to start the game, as a Brock Fike run, a screen pass from Cooper Knouse to Chase Wadding and a run by Knouse moved the chains and the ball down to the Brookville 35 yard line.
Then Knouse, who was pressured, let go of an inaccurate pass that fell into the hands of the free safety for an interception at the 13 to stall the drive. That was a sign of things to come, as the first quarter of the game was notably lacking in offensive production.
The third drive of the game, which spanned the end of the first and start of the second quarters, saw DuBois’ offense get going again.
Avery Ott and Fike had runs of 5 and 9 yards before Knouse hit Ott for 16 yards on a screen pass. Fike recorded runs of 2 and 8 yards, the latter resulting in a touchdown. Maddox Barnes hit the first of his three extra points to make it 7-0 DuBois.
Brookville’s offense then showed signs of life on the ensuing drive, ripping off a 27-yard — its longest play of the game. Any momentum was short-lived, as Mason Kaizer forced a fumble that was recovered by Michael Briggs.
That started a strong of turnovers, as Knouse tossed his second interception of the game before the Beavers got the ball back when Kaizer forced another fumble that Briggs recovered.
DuBois couldn’t capitalize though, as the teams traded punts.
The Beavers got the ball back with just over two minutes remaining in the first half and finally put together another drive. DuBois mixed the run and pass while working the clock.
Knouse had runs of 11 and 5 yards but did most of the work with his arm. He had completions of 15 and 18 yards to Kody Knisely and hit screen passes of 9 and 15 yards to Ott and Fike, respectively, to get to the Raider 4-yard line with four seconds left in the half.
After a timeout, Knouse threw a perfect pass to Fike in the corner of the end zone for a back-breaking score. Barnes converted the extra point, and DuBois took a 14-0 lead to the break.
Brookville got the ball to start the second half, but the DuBois defense came up with a huge play as Brogan Hoare stepped in front of a Raider pass on the first play for the interception.
The Beavers capitalized on this turnover and drove down the field for another score to turn what had been a 7-0 lead into a 21-0 advantage in short order around the half.
Fike started that drive with a run of 14 yards. Knouse then appeared to hit Ott in stride in the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown, but the ball slipped out of the receiver’s hands and fell incomplete.
That near-miss mattered little, as DuBois found the end zone three plays later. An 18-yard scamper by Fike helped set up his 5-yard TD run. Barnes kick made it 21-0 with just over two minutes left in the third.
DuBois began to substitute players on both offense and defense at that point and continued that trend for the next quarter and a half. Brookville avoided the shutout when it scored on a 25-yard run in the fourth where the ball carrier broke several broken tackles. The Raiders’ two-point try failed.
The Beavers added a final score in the final three minutes following a series of big plays on special teams. Fike pinned the Raiders deep in their own end at the 5 with a nice 44-yard punt.
The DuBois defense forced a three-and-out, and the Raiders tried a fake punt deep in its own territory. The punter tried to get a kick off at the last moment, but a Beaver blocked it at the goal line and Briggs recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown with 2:32 to play. Barnes’ final extra point set the final at 27-6.
DuBois (2-0) is back in action next Thursday at Central Clarion, while Brookville hosts Keystone on Wednesday.
