DOD issues Force Health Protection Guidance on COVID-19 and other infectious respiratory diseases. The memorandum rescinds the Consolidated COVID-19 Force Health Protection Guidance issued on March 24, 2023 and provides guidance to the Department on protecting its workforce and stakeholders from transmissible respiratory diseases and maintaining a healthy workforce and Force readiness.

Public Health Emergency for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service Act, expires at the end of this day.

Food and Drug Administration authorizes changes to simplify use of bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. This action authorizes the current bivilant vaccines to be used for all doses administered to individuals 6 months of age or older. It also authorizes individuals 65 years of age and older, and most individuals with certain kinds of immunocompromise, who have received a single dose of bivalent vaccine to receive an additional dose.

POTUS signs into law H.J.Res. 7, which terminates the national emergency related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Secretary of Defense rescinds the August 24, 2021, memorandum mandating that members of the Armed Forces under DOD authority be vaccinated against COVID-19, and the memorandum of November 30, 2021, pertaining to the vaccination of National Guard and Reserve personnel. This rescission requirement was established by the Fiscal Year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act.

POTUS announces he is launching the "Test to Treat" initiative so people can get tested at a pharmacy and, if they prove positive, receive the antiviral pills on the spot at no cost.

DOD announces that the Pentagon Reservation Health Protection Condition Level will change from Charlie to Bravo, effective immediately. DoD also announces that, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, masks are not required indoors in Pentagon Reservation facilities in Arlington County and the City of Alexandria, VA, as their COVID-19 community levels are designated as low.

Food and Drug Administration approves the first COVID-19 vaccine. Previously known as the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, it will now be marketed as Comirnaty for COVID-19 prevention in individuals 16 and older. The vaccine continues to be available under emergency use authorization, including for individuals 12 through 15 and for a third dose in certain immunocompromised individuals.

POTUS announces new actions to protect Americans from COVID-⁠19: administrating booster shots starting the week of September 20, pending final Food and Drug Administration evaluation and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for long-term care workers who serve Medicare and Medicaid enrollees; directing the Department of Education to use all available tools to safely reopen schools; extending 100% federal reimbursement to states for eligible COVID-19 emergency response costs; and extending 100% federal reimbursement to states for mobilizing National Guard personnel to support COVID-19 response efforts.

DOD announces that effective immediately, all military and civilian DOD personnel will be asked to attest to their vaccination status. If not, they will be required to wear a mask, physically distance, comply with a regular testing requirement and be subject to official travel restrictions. In addition, the Secretary will begin consulting DOD medical professionals and the Joint Chiefs of Staff to determine how and when to make recommendations to the President regarding adding COVID-19 vaccines to the full list of requirements for military personnel.

POTUS announces new actions to get more Americans vaccinated and slow the spread of the Delta COVID-19 variant.
