LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Good news for drivers who use the Kennedy Bridge to travel between Louisville and southern Indiana: All lanes are now open after several weeks of crews working to repair expansion joints.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, which manages the Interstate 65 crossing between Louisville and Jeffersonville, closed the left three lanes of the bridge May 20 to make the repairs. Once repairs to the left three lanes were completed, crews shifted to the four right-most lanes on June 10 for inspections and further maintenance work.
"An expansion joint is a component of the bridge deck, or travel surface, that allows for thermal expansion and contraction due to changes in weather to prevent concrete from cracking," KYTC said in a news release Friday afternoon.
Officials said they plan to completely replace the expansion joints at each end of the bridge soon. More details will be announced once the construction contract is awarded.
