Program offering free furnace checks in Brown County fills up

UPDATE: The Brown County Aging and Disability Resource Center is no longer accepting requests for its “Project Heat’s On” free furnace checks. The ADRC says it had an overwhelming response to our Action 2 News report and all of the available spots have been filled.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - People 60 and older living in Brown County can sign up to get their furnace checked for free. sand blasting machine

It’s called “Project Heat’s On” and it’s a partnership between the Brown County Aging and Disability Resource Center and Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 400.

It’s as simple as contacting the ADRC at (920) 448-4300. If you qualify, someone will come to your house to make sure your furnace is good for the winter. The deadline to sign up is Sept. 6.

They’ll also change your furnace filter and check the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors -- and replace those for free, as well, if necessary.

You need to be at least 60 years of age or receiving disability payments to take advantage of the program. You also have to own your home, and it has to be a single-family residence.

Furnaces need to be at least 10 years old to be inspected.

We spoke with a woman who says having her furnace checked means she doesn’t have to worry.

“I cannot go up and down the steps myself anymore to check it and I wanted to make sure it didn’t go out in the winter months and I’d have to get a new furnace,” Marion Rasmussen said. “My furnace is getting older, and i don’t want it to go out in December and I’ll be freezing in here without a furnace.”

“I think one of our goals at the Aging and Disability Resource Center is to help people remain in their homes as long as possible, so this program and us partnering with the Local 400 it’s just that peace of mind, especially when you’re on a budget,” ADRC’s Angela VanAsten said.

You can also get an application at the front desk of the ADRC, 300 S. Adams St.

Again, the deadline to sign is Sept. 6. Furnace inspections will happen on Sept. 21.
