If you love starting your day with Vinyasa flow yoga, come meet David Wajda, the newest yoga instructor at the Cleveland County Wellness Square (The Well), 210 S. James Garner Ave.

Wajda’s enthusiasm is contagious. He teaches Vinyasa Flow on Wednesdays at 6:30 a.m. where he helps students root themselves in mindfulness while improving balance and self-awareness.

When Wajda started his yoga journey in 2020, mindfulness, balance and self-awareness were in short supply in his life despite that he’d been making positive changes to improve his health since 2017. Following an argument with his wife, an anxiety attack sent him spinning out of control, and he knew he needed to do something different. Hoping to find his calm center, he turned on YouTube and pulled up a yoga workout. Yoga was just what he needed.

“I don’t know why it popped into my head to do yoga, but it did and it was just instantaneous good so I kept doing it,” he said.

Wajda had already learned that half measures wouldn’t take him where he wanted to be in his life. He embraced yoga and eventually sought training for teachers. Now, he’s sharing his enthusiasm and experience with others at The Well.

“My friend Josie taught at The Well and she told me she was leaving and that it was a nice place to teach,” he said. “Kelly Parker who originally started this class was one of the teachers who taught me and helped me get my certificate.”

Wajda is carrying on the legacy of teaching the early morning Wednesday class.

“I like to play 70s hippy music during the class,” he said. “Whenever the sun comes up it’s amazing. It’s a very cool place to start doing yoga in the morning.”

The class serves all levels, and he works with beginners while making it challenging for more advanced yogis. The class allows him to work more with individual needs and to vary the difficulty.

“I appreciate the diversity,” he said. “It makes me a better coach when I have to change things. The whole concept of yoga is to be adaptable.”

The class starts with meditation warm-ups, then goes into Vinyasa flow poses executed in a flowing sequence with the breath, allowing students to start their day feeling centered and refreshed.

“We are so pleased to be able to offer morning yoga again with such a passionate instructor like David,” said Tara McClain, The Well’s community engagement director. “He is an amazing addition to our team of instructors.”

Wajda teaches at other venues in the area but appreciates being able to bring this free class to The Well, allowing everyone to have access to the practice he loves. He also plays Spiderman for birthday parties and at conventions.

“Since I was a kid, I loved Batman and Spiderman, but Spiderman is more fun,” he said. “I like to jump around and act like Spiderman. He’s more of a joker and I’m more of a joker.”
