7 Times Celebrity Daughters Raided Their Moms’ Jewelry Boxes | Glamour

It’s a tale as old as time: a child sneaking into her mom’s closet to try on (and maybe even “borrow”) something from the treasure trove that is her jewelry box. It’s truly a universal experience; we know because we’ve done it—and seen celebrities do it, too.

Over the years, we’ve seen famouses pay homage to their equally famous parents by wearing their jewelry out in public, at times even recreating a parent’s original look. We’ve also seen that jewelry can be a point of connection to maternal figures who are no longer with us—like, in the case of Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Meghan Markle, who’ve both worn pieces from the late Princess Diana’s jewelry collection.

Ahead, read what celebrities have said about wearing their moms’ jewelry.

At the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Shell, Kaia Gerber paid tribute to her famous mother, Cindy Crawford, with an Hervé Leger recreation of her 1993 Oscars look. The dress was new, but Gerber’s jewels—the diamond necklace, earrings, and bracelet, plus the watch—were from vintage, plucked from Crawford’s personal collection, stylist Molly Dickson told Vogue.

When it comes to the Met Gala, Nicola Peltz Beckham has proven to like keeping her jewels in the family. At the 2023 event, she wore a dazzling necklace with a teardrop-shaped diamond pendant belonging to her mother, Claudia Heffner Peltz, who actually donned it to Nicola’s wedding to Brooklyn Beckham in 2022.

When Billie Lourd got married in 2022, she made sure to include her mother, the late Carrie Fisher, in the festivities, particularly through her jewelry: According to Vogue, she accessorized her Rodarte wedding dress with a blue fire opal ring (her “something blue”) that had belonged to her, as well as a ring the Star Wars actor had gifted a friend (her “something borrowed”). (Lourd’s engagement ring from Austen Rydell includes the diamond originally set in Fisher’s engagement ring from Bryan Lourd.)

Prince William proposed to Catherine, Princess of Wales with his mother’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring, which, as the story goes, she hand-picked from Garrard back in 1981. Over the years, the royal has worn a plethora of pieces from her late mother-in-law’s collection, including her double-drop sapphire earrings, diamond and South Sea pearl earrings, pearl drop earrings, four-row pearl choker, emerald choker, three-row pearl bracelet, and feathers brooch, as well as the Lover’s Knot tiara.

Heiress Isha Ambani has borrowed jewels from her mother, Nita Mukesh Ambani, many times over the years—most recently, for her younger brother Anant’s wedding festivities, according to the Times of India. For the Lagan Lakhvanu ceremony, she donned a diamond and emerald necklace, kundan polki earrings, bangles, and emerald ring that Nita had worn to the opening of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Culture Center in March 2023. She also found her diamond and emerald necklace, earrings, maang tikka, and bracelet for the pre-wedding parties in Nita’s personal collection. (The matriarch had worn these pieces to her eldest son Akash’s wedding in 2019.)

Ever since getting engaged to (and later marrying) Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has gained access to a true treasure trove of jewels. It began with her Cleave & Company engagement ring, which boasts two side stones from Princess Diana’s jewelry collection. On her wedding day, she wore Lady Di’s aquamarine cocktail ring to the reception. (She brought it back out on her royal tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand later that year, and again on a red carpet in 2022.) Since then, she’s been spotted donning the late royal’s diamond tennis bracelet, Tank Française watch, butterfly earrings, gold gemstone cuff and diamond cross necklace.

During her award season streak for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Jamie Lee Curtis wanted to make sure to keep her late parents, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, close. At the 2023 SAG Awards, she did so through jewelry. As she accepted her Best Supporting Actress prize, she revealed she was wearing her mother’s wedding ring, which she saw as a symbol of love. (Though, she clarified to the audience: “They hated each other, by the way, by the end of it.”) She later explained to People how, as she got ready, “I saw it in a little box and I thought about my parents and I wouldn't be here without them. I literally wouldn't be here without them, just biologically wouldn't be here without them, and I am a product of this town, these people. I never would have been an actor, it was a total fluke I became an actor. And so, I don't know, I just wanted to bring them here tonight… I came here with my mother the first time I was nominated and I really thought a lot about my parents and their story a lot."
